Huế is a city in central Vietnam that was the seat of Nguyen Dynasty emperors and the national capital from 1802-1945. A major attraction is its vast, 19th-century Citadel, surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls. It encompasses the Imperial City, with palaces and shrines; the Forbidden Purple City, once the emperor’s home; and a replica of the Royal Theater.
Nguyễn lords
Huế originally rose to prominence as the capital of the Nguyễn lords, a feudal dynasty that dominated much of southern Vietnam from the 17th to the 19th century. In 1775 whenTrịnh lord Trịnh Sâm captured it, it was known as Phú Xuân.
Nguyễn dynasty
In 1802, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh (later Emperor Gia Long) succeeded in establishing his control over the whole of Vietnam, thereby making Huế the national capital.
Minh Mạng (r. 1820-40) was the second emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty, reigning from 14 February 1820 (his 29th birthday) until his death, on 20 January 1841. He was a younger son of Emperor Gia Long, whose eldest son, Crown Prince Cảnh, had died in 1801.
Huế was the national capital until 1945, when Emperor Bảo Đại abdicated .

During the Republic of Vietnam, Huế's central location very near the border between the North and South put it in a vulnerable position in the Vietnam War. In the Tết Offensive of 1968, during the Battle of Huế, the city suffered considerable damage not only to its physical features, but its reputation as well, due to a combination of the American military bombing of historic buildings held by the North Vietnamese, and the massacre at Huế committed by the communist forces.
Huế is well known for its historic monuments, which have earned it a place in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.The seat of the Nguyễn emperors was the Imperial City, which occupies a large, walled area on the north side of the Perfume River. Inside the citadel was a forbidden city where only the emperors, concubines, and those close enough to them were granted access; the punishment for trespassing was death. Today, little of the forbidden city remains, though reconstruction efforts are in progress to maintain it as a historic tourist attraction.
Roughly along the Perfume River from Huế lie myriad other monuments, including the tombs of several emperors, including Minh Mạng, Khải Định, and Tự Đức. Also notable is the Thiên Mụ Pagoda, the largest pagoda in Huế and the official symbol of the city.
A number of French-style buildings lie along the south bank of the Perfume River. Among them are Quốc Học High School, the oldest high school in Vietnam, and Hai Ba Trung High School.
The Huế Royal Antiquities Museum on 3 Le Truc Street also maintains a collection of various artifacts from the city.
In addition to the various touristic attractions in Hué itself, the city also offers day-trips to the Demilitarized Zone lying approximately 70 km (43 mi) north, showing various war settings like The Rockpile, Khe Sanh Combat Base or the Vinh Moc tunnels.

Hué, cité impériale du centre du Viêtnam, est une ville remplie de charme et dynamique. Les femmes se rendent au marché alors que d'autres vont chez le coiffeur. Le port est rempli de sampans. Hué est également une ville riche en architecture. De nombreux temples sont édifiés en l'honneur d'un empereur, dont le temple de The Mien, construit en 1821 par l'empereur Minh Mong, et qui est orné d'urnes dynastiques. Des sculptures de licornes habillent ce temple. Le palais Thai Hoa et la cour des mandarins, ornée de vases bleues (exécutées en Chine par la cour impériale de Hué, datant de 1842), ainsi que le belvédère des cinq Phénix illustrent la richesse du patrimoine architecturale de Hué.

One of several beautiful gates entering the walled Imperial City in Vietnam's ancient city of Hué. Here we are crossing the moat that surrounds the walls and this is the side of the Citadel that faces the River of Perfumes. Many of the men in my army communications unit toured the historic sites here with a tour guide from the Hué Tourist Bureau, which somehow remained active even during the war, at least until the Têt Offensive intervened in February, 1968.
After heavy damage during the Têt Offensive, the gate has since been restored to some of its previous grandeur: A 2014 photo.

Photographed in September, 1967, this is the King's Knight flag tower, holding a dominant position along the River of Perfumes at the front of the Ngọ Môn, or Noontime, Gate into the walled Imperial City. Built in 1809 and rebuilt in 1949 after a local upheaval, at 120 feet high this is the tallest and most beautiful flag tower in Vietnam.

The Ngọ Môn Gate is a large structure containing three entrances to the Imperial City in Hué, Vietnam. During the Nguyen Dynasty, only the center gate was opened whenever the Emperor departed and returned to the Imperial City. The structure above the gate is the Ngũ Phuͅng (Five Phoenix) building. I took this photo in September, 1967 during a visit to Hué while I was with the US army in Vietnam.

Nhà thờ dòng Chúa cứu Thế _ 142 Nguyễn Huệ, thành phố Huế .Đây là một công trình công giáo đồ sộ, có giá trị kiến trúc cao tại thành phố, được xây dựng từ năm 1937 đến 1942 – cũng là một địa chỉ đỏ của giáo dân ở cố đô và cả khách thập phương. Người ta không chỉ tới đây cầu nguyện mà còn để chiêm ngưỡng vẻ đẹp tráng lệ của công trình này.
Bước vào thánh đường, ta có cảm giác ở đây không có cột, không có vách, không hệ thống điện… bên trong luôn có đủ ánh sáng tự nhiên. Nội thất nhà thờ rộng 38m, dài 72m luôn được chiếu sáng bởi hệ thống những tấm kính màu cỡ lớn trên các mảng tường.

The airport serving Hué is at Phu Bai, just across the road from the base where I was stationed with the US army in 1967. This Air Vietnam DC-6 airliner arrived while I was enjoying the action here at the airport one afternoon.
The airport is 9 miles or so south of Hué and now has a sizeable international terminal and new control tower.
